April LAPC Photo Shoot

Hercules Haven

Where:  1220 Lilly Street Cedar Rapids

When:  Sunday April 29

Time:  4pm to 6pm

Its time to head back outside for our LAPC group shoots!  In April we are heading to a different kind of animal shelter.  Hercules Haven is home to many animals including:  three alpine goats, two Nubian goats, two mini-pigs, four pot-belly pigs, three horses, twenty five chickens, a baby lamb, four barn cats, three dogs and two house cats.  They are typically closed Sundays, so we’ll have the farm to ourselves.

They normally charge admission, but are waiving the admission for our group.  There will be a free will donation set out and I’ve promised a handful of photographers will donate a few images back as a thank you.

We suggest you wear farm appropriate footwear.

Please RSVP to [email protected] so I can let our contact know how many from LAPC are coming.

Great news from Adobe for photographers!

Adobe has finally listened to photographers complaints about the “Creative Cloud” and has put together a great bundle for roughly the same price as updating your Lightroom every year!
Now you can get Lightroom AND Photoshop for $9.99 a month on the creative cloud! This might be worth considering.  :o)

Looking for some feedback…

I'm looking for some feedback from the club…

I was talking with an internet friend/aquaintance that is a pro photographer, and was giving him a hassle about when he was going to come to the midwest to give a seminar/presentation now that he is done with his regular scheduled stuff. He responded that he “didn't have plans yet but wanted to get out here sometime… I'm open to suggestions”!
What I'd like to do is see how many people would be interested in getting him to Iowa for a day. I'm going to talk with Bob R. and Bob L. at the meeting this weekend to see what kind of interest there would be for the club and what options we have. Give us some feedback if you make it to the meeting!

Some of you have seen his work and not known it, he is very highly published, maybe you already know who he is and follow his work?
His name is Jon Cornforth.
Below are a couple links if you would like to check out his work, maybe you will be saying “I know that photo!”
I've been following his work for the last 3-4 years… you won't regret taking a little time to look at the links below!

Russian Photographer from Early 1900’s – Unbelievable Pictures

Quite amazing! No computer, no Picaso, no Photo Shop, no Print Shop, no color film. Interesting photos taken by Russian photographer in late 1800's and early 1900's taken in several countries in color.

He used a three plate camera with black and white film, each film exposed through either a red, green or blue filter, then he printed each film on a single piece of special color paper through the complementary filters of cyan, magenta and yellow, creating a color image on the paper. A VERY tedious process that produces a color image that will last centuries and the B&W negatives also will last that long for reprinting.

Laurence Gartel: Photographer and Artist

I saw this video of Laurence and his 30 plus years of photography and art.

It's amazing what he can create with a point and shoot camera!

‘Sri Lanka and the Maldives' Safari

May 24 – Jun 05, 2011

Unbeknownst to many, Sri Lanka, an island nation off the southern tip of India, is an exciting and exotic destination just waiting to be explored. Sri Lanka boasts the largest concentration of leopards, wild elephants and sloth bears in Asia, making it (together with hundreds of other species and some outstanding national parks) a unique safari destination. If culture is your thing, Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, has been for centuries a center of convergence for Buddhism, Hindusim and several other ancient beliefs. Not only that, the country lays claim to a long and colorful history of over three thousand year – one of the longest documented histories in the world! Home to some of the most magnificent beaches, tropical forests, mountain ranges and rich soil on the subcontinent, Sri Lanka served as an important shipping center for tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon. So, its no wonder that this “pearl of the Indian Ocean” was sought after by Portugal, the Netherlands and the British Empire. Still not convinced about this tour? On top off all the above, we'll enjoy three relaxing days at the world’s most premier beach holiday destination (Maldives) – a place that nobody can say no to. WANT is waiting to take you here. Sign up today!
USD 150.- early booking discount until Jan 31!

Central Africa Wildlife Expedition

Nov 02 – Nov 14, 2011

Natural history documentaries often feature an opening somewhere in the African jungles, frequented by an enormous amount of forest inhabitants. Due to their forest diet, they are all starving for minerals, and the best way for them to get what they want is to simply eat and drink the mineral-rich muddy waters of these forest openings. There are hundreds of species, but they all come for the same reason. Swarming butterflies form a brown carpet over the scene, huge groups of forest elephants come from any and all directions, red river hogs wade in the muddiest spots, rare sitatungas and bongo antelopes mind their steps behind the scarce cover, unique species of monkeys and birds come by, and if we were lucky, the king of these jungles, the majestic forest gorilla silverback will bring his entire family to the feast.
If you ever thought that one day you would visit such a remote and incredible natural beauty, your chance has come! WANT Expeditions just pioneered the very best and most comfortable way to do so, and spiced it with exciting trekking of gorilla families in the surrounding forests, with a visit to the elusive Ba’aka pygmy tribe and with real Indiana Jones-style boat trips down the majestic Sangha River. Don’t wait, join us, this trip is a rare beauty and fills up very fast! See you in the African jungles!
USD 150.- early booking discount until Jan 31!

Uganda Mountain Gorilla Extension

Jan 18 – Jan 23, 2012

Throughout the past 40 years, monumental efforts have been made to save the critically endangered mountain gorillas, and for many of us the chance of seeing them in our lifetime, other than in zoos, still remains a remote possibility. However, if you have ever dreamed of the magical experience of interacting with these great beasts, and seeing them as close up as the photos in wildlife magazines, your chance has come.
A visit to this special place will be an experience that your children's children will talk about, and space is extremely limited. Only 24 permits to see the gorillas are issued per day, and they are divided into three groups of eight, which makes your experience a once in a lifetime opportunity and ensures that you will share this moment only with those closest to you. See you in Uganda!
“When you realize the value of all life, you dwell less on what is past and concentrate more on the preservation of the future.” Diane Fossey

Conservation newsAre you keeping with your New Year’s Resolution? We are, and right now we’re just proud as peacocks, because we’ve just ordered our first shipment of reusable stainless steel water bottles for use on all WANT Expeditions. On any of our expeditions, access to clean, fresh drinking water is paramount for all our guests and staff, and for like most travel companies, unfortunately this came at the cost of using plastic water bottles, often in high numbers. It didn’t take long for us to see the environmental dilemma we were creating, particularly in regions where recycling opportunities were none existent, or in places like Midway Atoll, where sea birds chicks are dying from plastics being fed to them by their parents.
At WANT Expeditions, we don’t want to be part of the problem; we want to be part of the solution. So, after a great deal of thought and effort on behalf of all our wonderful staff and affiliates from around the world, we resolved that one of the ways to truly stand out above the crowd and keep our claim as a conservation oriented company, was that starting January 2011, all WANT Expedition guests would be equipped with a reusable stainless steel water bottle for use not just on all WANT Expeditions, but also to take home and use for every day purposes. You already know that by choosing WANT Expeditions, you are actively conserving the world's resources. But did you know, that by switching to a reusable water flask, you’ll be helping to reduce the carbon footprint of all WANT Expeditioners by over 27,500 plastic water bottles every year just on our trips alone? We'll drink to that!

Thank you for traveling with us,
