Weekly Assignment

We finished up the Solitude assignment this week. Solitude can be a difficult thing to convey. There were a lot of posts that just touched at the edge of it, but our favourites were ones that really brought the idea of solitude to mind.

Our winner this week was duna's “dunescape”. The footsteps indicate that someone was there, but now they're gone, and the way the tree has been avoided further emphasises that idea of solitude.

Our first runner up was evader's self portrait. He explained what solitude was to him: “Solitude for me is sneaking out in the middle of the night in the rain after my wife and kids are in bed asleep to enjoy one of the Cuban's brought back from a recent trip to Varadero.” And this photo clearly shows exactly what he described solitude to be. The lighting in this is quite creative as well, and the image really stands out.

And last but not least was homnibus‘ picture of a little girl alone at a table. The solitude is really emphasised with the girl looking out of the frame and the lack of people around her. It makes you wonder why she's sitting alone, why there's nobody else around, and what the story is.

In many places around the world, this weekend is Mother's Day, and to celebrate, our current assignment is Mothers. Whether it's a portrait of your own mother, an image of a mother and child, or something that brings back a memory of your mother, we want to see how you can interpret this assignment. As always, a quick reminder of the rules. First, your Photo must have been taken between 27 April – 11 May 2011. Second, your post must include the word “Mothers” and the date the photo was taken. Finally, your EXIF should be intact, and it's useful if you can include some of the main points such as camera, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc.

Next week we will be starting our Fathers assignment. Let's not forget our dads and what they mean to us. The same sort of ideas apply to the fathers assignment. Whether it's a photo of your own dad, a picture of a father interacting with his child or something that brings back memories of your father, we want you to come share with us. The assignment will be posted in the Assignments forum on 11 May, but you can start shooting now. Good luck everyone!
